Today the Weathered Plains felt like they were stretching after a long nap. Tiny green shoots poked up between the dry grasses, and the wind smelled like rain and sunshine mixed together.
I knelt down near a sandy ridge and spotted something peeking out — a little piece of petrified wood! It was striped with soft browns and yellows, like the Earth had painted it with a tiny brush.
When I held it up, a meadowlark landed on a fence post and sang a song that sounded like, “Look closer!”
Spring on the Plains is full of surprises. You just have to slow down and let the world wake up around you.
