How the Fossil Ranch tier system works
Uncommon, Rare, and Ultra Rare aren’t hype labels—they’re a simple way to understand the natural variety and scarcity of each Deep Time Fragment.
Nature doesn’t make duplicates. Some fragments are simple and beautiful. Some are unusual. A few are truly extraordinary.
Our tier system—Uncommon, Rare, and Ultra Rare—is our way of honoring that natural variety without making things complicated.
It helps you understand what you’re holding, build a collection with intention, and choose the level of rarity that feels right for you.

Uncommon
Entry tier
Uncommon fragments are your entry into deep time.
They have clear textures, visible structure, and beautiful character.
They’re the most accessible tier, perfect for first‑time collectors, families, and classrooms.
-
Authentic Petrified Wood
-
Clear geological features
-
Best for starting your collection

Rare
Elevated tier
Rare fragments stand out.
They may have unusual patterns, striking coloration, or more complex formations.
They’re less common in each batch and feel like a natural step up for collectors who want something special.
-
More distinctive visual character
-
Found less frequently than Uncommon
-
Great for building a focused collection

Ultra Rare
Exceptional tier
Ultra Rare fragments are the showstoppers.
They’re the pieces with dramatic character—unexpected formations, bold contrasts, or highly unusual structures.
Only a small number qualify as Ultra Rare in each collection.
-
Most limited tier in each release
-
Highest visual impact
-
Ideal for serious collectors and display pieces
Tiers across the Four Worlds
Tiers span all four worlds
Every world—Weathered Plains, River‑Worn, Buried Grove, and Mineral Wonders—contains Uncommon, Rare, and Ultra Rare fragments.
That means you can collect by world, by tier, or both:
-
Collect by world: Focus on the landscapes and environments that speak to you.
-
Collect by tier: Chase Uncommon, Rare, or Ultra Rare across all four worlds.
-
Collect by both: Build sets like “All Ultra Rares from Mineral Wonders” or “Every tier from Buried Grove.”
The tier system is consistent, no matter which world you choose.

How The Fossil Hunter decides a tier
How a fragment becomes Uncommon, Rare, or Ultra Rare
Each fragment is evaluated by hand using a few simple criteria:
-
Visual character: pattern, texture, contrast, and overall presence
-
Formation features: visible structures, inclusions, or unusual shapes
-
Relative scarcity: how often similar pieces appear in a collection
If a fragment doesn’t truly feel Uncommon, then The Fossil Hunter didn't collect it. If it's not Rare or Ultra Rare, it isn’t labeled that way.

Choosing your tier
Which tier is right for you?

-
Choose Uncommon if you’re just starting, buying for kids, or building a classroom set.
-
Choose Rare if you want something with more personality and visual impact.
-
Choose Ultra Rare if you love the idea of owning one of the most exceptional pieces from a batch.
