Explore the Four Ancient Worlds
Every Deep Time Fragment comes from one of four environments shaped by time, pressure, and the slow work of the Earth. Each world tells a different story shaped by Epic TIme.

WEATHERED PLAINS
Sun‑Carved. Wind‑Shaped. Ancient.

The Weathered Plains stretch across what was once a vast desert forest. Millions of years ago, towering conifers grew here, their roots gripping dry, sandy soil. When the climate shifted, the forest fell and was buried beneath windblown sediment. Over time, iron‑rich minerals seeped into the wood, staining it with warm reds, ochres, and sun‑baked browns. Eventually it was exposed once again to the surface and weathered by the elements.
Fragments from this world carry the marks of sun and wind — rugged textures, desert hues, and the quiet endurance of a landscape shaped by extremes.
STEM Insight:
Iron oxides create the Plains’ signature colors.
Arid exposure produces lighter sun-bleached patterns and wind smoothed surfaces.
Fossil Hunter’s Note:
“The Plains teach patience. Only time and wind can carve a story this bold.”
Field Journal Prompt:
Sketch the grain patterns of your Weathered Plains fossil.
What colors do you see? What minerals might have created them?

RIVER‑WORN
Shaped by Water. Smoothed by Time.

Long ago, a network of ancient rivers wound through this region, carrying fallen trees downstream. As the wood settled into riverbeds, layers of sediment gently buried it. Mineral‑rich water flowed through the logs, replacing each cell with quartz. After millions of years, it was exposed again by a river and polished smooth, leaving behind soft edges and ripple‑like grain patterns.
Fragments from this world feel calm — shaped by the steady rhythm of flowing water.
STEM Insight:
Silica‑rich groundwater is responsible for the River‑Worn world’s smooth textures and subtle banding.
Fossil Hunter’s Note:
“Hold a River‑Worn fossil and you can almost hear the ancient current.”
Field Journal Prompt:
Trace the smoothest edge of your fragment.
Imagine the river that shaped it — fast, slow, deep, shallow?

BURIED GROVE
A Forest Preserved in Stone.

The Buried Grove was once a thriving prehistoric forest. When a sudden flood swept through, entire stands of trees were buried in mineral‑rich mud. Deprived of oxygen, the wood did not decay. Instead, minerals replaced the organic material ring by ring, preserving the structure of the trees in astonishing detail.
Fragments from this world often show visible tree rings, bark textures, and cellular patterns — a direct window into a forest that lived millions of years before humans.
STEM Insight:
Permineralization preserves microscopic details, making Buried Grove fossils some of the most scientifically valuable.
Fossil Hunter’s Note:
“The Grove whispers. Its rings hold stories older than mountains.”
Field Journal Prompt:
Count the visible rings on your fragment.
What might this tree have lived through?

MINERAL WONDERS
Where Geology Becomes Art.
Deep beneath the surface, unusual mineral flows transformed this region into a kaleidoscope of color. As petrified wood formed, pockets of quartz, jasper, agate, and hematite crystallized within the grain. Deep Time, pressure, and chemistry collided to create vivid bands, crystal clusters, and rare mineral blooms.
Fragments from this world are the most visually striking — each one a natural work of art.
STEM Insight:
Mineral inclusions form when silica carries trace elements like iron, manganese, or copper into the wood during fossilization.
Fossil Hunter’s Note:
“Mineral Wonders are unpredictable. Nature paints with a wild hand here.”
Field Journal Prompt:
List the colors you see.
Which minerals might be responsible for each?

THE RARE VARIANTS
Discoveries Born of Extraordinary Conditions.
Across all Four Worlds, a small number of fossils form under rare geological circumstances — unusual mineral flows, exceptional clarity, or dramatic color contrasts. These are the ★ Rare Variants.
Finding one is a moment of true discovery.
Fossil Hunter’s Note:
“When the earth decides to create something rare, it leaves no doubt.”
